Posting

Writing a post, adding a link, choosing who sees it.

The box at the top of your feed and at the top of your own profile is the same box. A post can hold words, up to four photos or videos, and a link — any of those, in any combination, as long as it has at least one of them.

Links that play

Paste a link into the Add a link field and five services play inline instead of sitting there as a link: YouTube, Vimeo, Spotify, SoundCloud and Bandcamp. The link itself is still shown underneath, so nobody has to guess where they are about to go.

A link that ends in .mp4, .webm, .mov or .m4v — or an audio file — is not treated as a link at all. It becomes an attachment on the post with a player, as though you had uploaded it. Anything else is shown as a plain link with just its domain on it.

Bandcamp is the fussy one. A normal album page does not embed; you need the EmbeddedPlayer link that Bandcamp gives you under Share.

Who sees it

Every post has an audience, set by the dropdown in the composer: Anyone, Friends, Close friends or Only me. It starts at whatever Settings → Privacy → Who sees new posts by default says. Who can see what explains what each one means.

Changing your mind

A post cannot be edited once it is up. It can be deleted, and the Delete button is on your own profile page — not in the feed and not on the post’s own page. So if a typo is going to bother you, the fix is to delete it and post it again.

Small things worth knowing

  • What you have typed is kept as you go. Close the tab mid-sentence and it is still there when you come back, with a note saying so. Attachments are not kept.
  • Each photo or video gets a Describe it box. It is worth using — it is what somebody reading with a screen reader gets instead of the picture.
  • There is no like button, no reactions and no counter. If a post is worth responding to, say something.
  • You have to confirm your email address before you can post. See Signing in.
