Who can see what

The four audiences, what each one means, and the one thing that overrides them all.

Every post has one of four audiences. You pick it when you post.

AudienceWho can see it
AnyoneEverybody, including people who are not signed in.
FriendsPeople whose friend request you have accepted.
Close friendsFriends you have marked close. See Friends — it is your setting about them.
Only meNobody but you.

Settings → Privacy → Who sees new posts by default sets which one a new post starts on, so the audience you use most is the one you do not have to think about. You can still change it on any individual post as you write it.

Blocking beats everything

A block is checked first, before the audience is even looked at. A blocked person cannot see your posts, your page, or your gallery, whatever the post is set to, and cannot get at them through anybody else.

Two things that are not obvious

  • An accepted mention widens the audience. If a friend agrees to a post of yours appearing on their page, their friends can see it too. See Putting a post on a friend’s page.
  • Your profile’s look is public in a way your posts are not. Anyone with the link sees your name, picture, headline and colors. What they see below that is whatever their relationship to you allows.

Pictures

The gallery on your page filters to what the person looking is allowed to see, and your own gallery labels the restricted ones so you can tell at a glance which pictures are not public.
