These terms are the agreement between you and Cole Wuilleumier, an individual, who runs Our Web. Using the site means you accept them. They are written to be read, so they are shorter and plainer than most.
Who can join
You have to be 18 or older. We ask for your date of birth when you sign up and refuse the account if the answer is under 18. This is a hard line, not a formality: if we find out an account belongs to someone under 18 we will close it.
Signups are invitation-only for now. Don’t sell or trade invitations, and don’t make a second account to get around something we’ve done to your first one. Give us a real email address you can actually receive mail at — it is the only way back into your account if you forget your password.
Your account
You are responsible for what happens under your account, so pick a password you don’t use anywhere else. Tell us at support@ourweb.social if you think someone else has gotten into it.
What you post stays yours
You keep every right you already had in the things you write and upload. We don’t claim ownership of any of it, we don’t sell it, and we don’t use it to train anything.
What you give us is narrow and practical: permission to store your posts and files and show them to the people your own visibility settings say can see them, and to make the copies and resized versions needed to do that. It exists so the site can display your page. It ends when you delete the thing, except for backup copies that age out on their own.
What you may not put here
Nothing on this list is negotiable:
- Anything that infringes someone else’s copyright, trademark or other rights.
- Sexual content involving anyone under 18, in any form, real or drawn or generated. This gets reported, not just removed.
- Harassment, threats, or content whose point is to make a specific person’s life worse. Disagreeing with someone is the entire idea of the comments; hounding them is not.
- Impersonating a real person or organization, or building a page designed to be mistaken for one — a fake sign-in screen, a fake payment page, a fake receipt.
- Malware, or code meant to attack visitors, other members, or this site.
- Spam, bulk unsolicited messages, and scraping other members’ pages.
- Anything illegal where you are or where we are.
Code on your profile
Your profile takes your own HTML and CSS, and it will render an embedded frame you point at another site. That is the best thing about this place and also the easiest thing to misuse, so it comes with its own rules.
We strip out what we know is dangerous — scripts, forms, and any frame that could reach back into the page around it — and we will keep tightening that as we find gaps. What we cannot check is what the sites you frame are doing. When you embed something, you are handing everyone who visits your page over to whoever runs it, and their IP address goes along with them. Embed things you would be comfortable sending a friend to directly.
Don’t use custom code to imitate another site or another member, to hide what a link does, to track visitors, or to work around the parts of the site that decide who can see what. We can remove custom code from a page without closing the account, and usually will.
Copyright complaints
If something here infringes your copyright, write to dmca@ourweb.social with enough detail to act on: what the work is, where on the site the copy is (a link), how to reach you, and a statement that you believe in good faith the use isn’t authorized and that what you’ve told us is accurate. We will take down anything that looks like a valid complaint, promptly, and tell the member what happened.
If your post was removed and you think that was wrong, reply and say so. If the complaint doesn’t hold up, we will put it back.
Repeat infringers lose their accounts. This is a real policy and not a line of boilerplate: we keep a record of complaints against each account, and an account that keeps drawing valid ones gets closed. Two strikes are a conversation; a pattern is the end of it.
What we can do about content
We can remove a post, take custom code off a page, suspend an account, or close one permanently. Suspension is reversible and takes your pages off the site without destroying anything; deletion is not reversible. We would rather talk to you first and usually will, but we won’t always be able to.
Every removal an administrator performs is written to an internal log, together with a copy of enough of what was removed to answer “what did you delete?” later. That log is not public and is not shown to other members.
Storage
Accounts can have a limit on how much you store. If you’re over one, new uploads are refused — nothing already uploaded is deleted because of it. We’ll tell you before changing a limit on your account in a way that affects you.
Leaving, and being asked to leave
You can delete your account whenever you like — the button is under Settings → Your data, and it asks for your password because it cannot be undone. It removes your profile, your posts, your uploaded files, your connections and your notifications. Comments you left on other people’s posts are part of those conversations; ask us if you want those gone too and we’ll take care of it.
We can close an account that breaks these terms. If we ever shut the whole site down, we’ll give you notice and a way to get your things out first.
The honest part about reliability
Our Web is a small site run by one person. It is provided as it is, with no warranty of any kind. It will sometimes be slow, sometimes be down, and could lose data. Keep your own copies of anything you would be upset to lose — that is not us dodging responsibility, it is a straight description of what a hobby project can promise.
To the fullest extent the law allows, Cole Wuilleumier isn’t liable for indirect or consequential damages arising from your use of the site, and total liability for any claim is limited to what you have paid us, which is currently nothing.
Changes
We’ll update these terms from time to time. When a change is significant we’ll say so on the site and ask you to accept the new version rather than quietly swapping the page. The date at the top always tells you which version you are reading.
Law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, and any dispute goes to the state or federal courts located there.
