Add photos or video in the composer. Up to four files on one post.
| Kind | Formats | Largest |
|---|---|---|
| Photos | JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF | 10 MB |
| Video | MP4, WebM, MOV | 250 MB |
250 MB is around a minute of 4K from a phone. Photos over about half a megabyte are shrunk in your browser before they are sent — down to 2048 pixels on the long edge — so a picture straight off a camera does not cost you a slow upload. The thumbnail tells you when that has happened.
Big files take a different route
Anything over 8 MB goes from your browser straight to storage rather than through us, which is why those are the ones with a real progress percentage and a Cancel button. If it stalls, it says so rather than spinning forever, and you get a Try again on that file alone — the rest of the post is unaffected.
Two iPhone problems, and the one setting that fixes both
An iPhone saves photos as HEIC and video as HEVC unless told otherwise. HEIC is refused outright, because browsers cannot display it and a photo nobody can see is worse than an error. HEVC video will upload but only plays in Safari.
On the phone: Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. From then on it saves JPEG and H.264, and both problems go away. It does not change photos you have already taken.
If it says uploads are not available
That message means something is wrong at our end, not with your file. It is worth trying again later, and worth telling us if it keeps happening — nothing automatically alerts us when an upload fails.
The gallery
Pictures from your posts also collect into a gallery on your profile — the eight most recent, with a link to the rest. It only ever shows a visitor pictures from posts they were already allowed to see. Videos stay in their posts.
You can turn the gallery off, or move it, from Page design.
